There is a Growing Demand for Chiropractors in Sports Medicine
Many athletes, from high school up to the professional level, are sidelined with injuries which ultimately could have been avoided. Most of these athletes are sitting on the sidelines simply because their injury did not entirely respond to traditional treatments. Many more of these athletes continue to play, but at far less than maximal efficiency, because their biomechanical and structural systems are not properly functioning. Forward thinking coaches, doctors, and athletic trainers are realizing that covering up the symptoms with pain killing drugs is NOT the answer! Medications are a powerful tool, although sometimes covering up a symptom such as pain may deceive the athlete into actions which ultimately could make their injury more severe. Chiropractors are able to utilize non invasive forms of therapy designed to target muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints in the injured area. They are also able address the athlete as a whole, to make sure their body is operating at peak performance. Chiropractors are experts in biomechanics, kinesiology, and musculoskeletal injuries; they are a valuable addition to any sports medicine team.
The term "chiropractic" is typically associated with treatment of the spine. Sports chiropractic differs from chiropractic in general in that there is a greater focus on the biomechanics of the whole body, especially while performing specific sports. Sports chiropractors study sports technique in great detail, and familiarize themselves with the likely injuries involved in each sport.
Performance enhancement is another important element of sports chiropractic. Although most people associate chiropractic with spinal injury, serious athletes are more likely to consider a chiropractor's ability to enhance their performance. A chiropractor's detailed knowledge of anatomy, coupled with their unmatched ability to feel anatomic structures with their hands, make them the ideal addition to an athletes treatment team. When working with a professional sports team, for example, the chiropractor's role on the treatment team is typically that of performance enhancement, and less commonly associated with rehabilitation.
Chiropractors typically employ hands-on therapies such as adjustments, Kinesio Taping and Graston Technique to treat injuries, strengthen tissues and enhance performance.
Dr. Barone employs a hands-on approach to treat injuries and improve performance, with secondary home treatment consisting of stretching, ice or exercise prescription.
Why Treat Athletes?
Dr. Barone has had the honor of treating athletes of all levels, but his favorite athlete to treat is the one he helps you become.
Stretching Prescriptions
When stretching, it is essential that we perform them correctly. Doing the wrong stretches
(or doing them incorrectly) may slow down healing or cause the problem to worsen.
Pre-Event Treatment
Chiropractic treatments before an event will maximize your performance and prevent injury. Each muscle and joint in your body can be treated simply, safely and effectively to provide better motion and greater tissue strength.
Preventive Maintenance
Regular treatments help to prevent injuries from occuring again. Your success in achieving fitness is never final. It is a goal for which you must habitually strive.
